The Indiana State Fair is about ready to begin. The annual extravaganza starts tomorrow August 6th and continues until Sunday August 22nd. Over a million people will visit the Fair over its run observing the pigs, cows, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, fish, and/or learning a bit about agriculture and/or having fun on the Midway and/or attending a demonstrations on products that make life a bit easier to navigate. Yes you can cook an entire meal in 4 pans stacked on top of each other. They also will eat a lot of interesting food like elephant ears, grilled corn on the cob, and deep fried Twinkies. The newest addition I am told for this year is deep fried butter. We wonder why Lipitor is so popular!
I enjoy attending the Fair and go about every year. One thing that has been on my “to do” list has been to help out at the Fair in some way. In the spirit of “this is the first day of the rest of your life” I sent an email to a friend of mine earlier this week asking if he knew of anyone at the Fair and if they needed some help. A couple of days later I received an email from the individual that is responsible for public safety and logistics at the Fair. To my surprise we knew each other and had worked together several years ago on a marketing campaign. Someone he expected to show up for the Fair did not come this year. Would I consider helping him as a parking supervisor?
He said the position did not pay much. I would be working with a group of 8 people. I asked, “Do you get free food?” He responded, “No but we’ll let you use the refrigerator.” I then asked, “Do you get a discount to the Dairy Bar?” The response, “No but you’ll get to drive a golf cart and we’ll give you an unlimited supply of free water.” Oh and my shift starts at 5:30 AM each morning.
He did say I would get a tee shirt and a hat!
It is the people I find fascinating. This is his 18th Fair. He has been working full time for the State of Indiana for the past three years. Before that when we worked together he was in advertising and would take vacation each summer to work the Fair. I met my supervisor. He has worked at the Fair for over 20 years. I understand there are people that travel from all over the country to come and work the Fair with their friends and they have been doing it for years. My hunch is that there are some very interesting stories that need to be experienced.
So I cleared my schedule for the next two weeks and told him “Yes”. I don’t know where this is going to go but I’m sure I will see and do things in the next two weeks that will teach me things I can use in my “day” job. I have no idea what they are and I will try to keep a running commentary on the blog. Please check back to see how things are going.
Priscilla Lindsay, a very popular actress in Indianapolis for many years is moving to Ann Arbor Michigan. At her going away party held this week she told the crowd “You don’t grow better at what you do unless you are willing to get out of your comfort zone.”
Until tomorrow – all the best!
